We know how much your kids love dancing and playing in the sun, summer is all about fun! Not to mention, the health benefits of spending time outdoors. When the body is exposed to the sun, our bodies make vitamin D which helps kids develop stronger, healthier bones.
However, too much unprotected exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause skin damage, eye damage, immune system suppression, and skin cancer. So how do we keep our kids safe while they burn all of their energy in the backyard?
Make sure to wear sunscreen.
Regardless of skin tone, all children should wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Make sure whatever sunscreen you choose, it’s broad-spectrum (protecting against both UVA and UVB rays). If you’re spending the day by the pool, at the beach, or frolicking in a splash pad, make sure to reapply often and generously. Water-resistant is best to avoid the sun’s harmful rays!
Cover up and avoid the sun completely.
It’s easier said than done, but the best way to protect your kids from the sun’s rays is to avoid it altogether. Well, at least during certain parts of the day.
Do your best to try to stay in the shade when the sun is at its strongest. This is usually from 10am to 4pm. Even in the shade, make sure that you’re applying and reapplying sunscreen frequently.
Try to have your children in clothing that covers up any sensitive skin. Put your hand inside the garments you choose and make sure that you can’t see through them. Keep in mind that babies have thinner skin and underdeveloped melanin in comparison to older children, meaning they burn much more quickly. Make sure they’re wearing clothing that covers their body completely, like cool onesies and a sun hat with a wide brim.
Don’t forget their eyes.
How many times have you found yourself saying, “Don’t stare at the sun!” Sun exposure damages the eyes as well as the skin. Sun exposure over time can cause cataracts later in life. Find sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection. Let your kids find their own pair to be sure that they wear them and keep them safe!
